This week, the Bionexus technical team visited the Les Closes estate, where a restoration project funded by the foundation and carried out by the Alive Foundation—winner of a 2025 Research Grant—will take place.
The Les Closes estate is located in Sant Climent Sescebes (Albera) and features coniferous forests and cork oak groves in the upper area, alongside temporary ponds in the lower sections. In its temporary ponds, species of high ecological value have been documented, such as Juncus heterophyllus and several amphibian species, including the Pelobates cultripes.
During the visit, technicians from the Alive Foundation explained in-situ the various interventions planned to restore the estate and enhance habitat quality. The measures are focused primarily on the temporary ponds, aiming to increase water retention and support aquatic flora and fauna. To achieve this, a topographic survey will be conducted to partially block the drainage channels of Estany Gran and the former Estany Pedragoler. Plans also include eradicating giant reed patches and clearing terrestrial vegetation encroaching on the ponds, helping aquatic vegetation establish once water retention is prolonged. Finally, microhabitats will be created by piling dry stone and dead wood to foster native wildlife diversity. Part of these actions is funded by Bionexus under the 2025 Research Grant and and will be carried out during 2027.
